How to Stop Talking Past Each Other

Bridge with Understanding, Clarity and Connection written on it

💬 “Most misunderstandings don’t come from what was said… but from what wasn’t understood.”

If there’s one challenge I see over and over, whether in leaders, teams, families, or relationships, it’s the communication gap. People talk, people listen, but somehow… the message gets lost in between.

Sometimes it shows up as frustration. Sometimes as avoidance. Sometimes, as “Didn’t we JUST talk about this?!”

And sometimes, it shows up as really significant missed opportunities for connection.

🌟 A Night That Reminded Me of the Power of Great Communication

Recently, I had the honour of attending the 35th Excellence in Business Awards hosted by the Sydney & Area Chamber of Commerce.

It was a beautiful reminder of something important:

✨ Strong communication builds strong communities.

Hearing the speeches, celebrating the nominees, and watching businesses cheer for one another made me reflect on how communication shapes culture, in companies, in organizations, and even in our everyday conversations.

We all want to feel seen, heard, and valued. And that only happens when communication is intentional.

Sometimes, to communicate effectively, we need to understand ourselves, where we are at, as well as where we want to go. If you need some guidance on understanding yourself, your strengths and moving forward with confidence, click on the link below to download my Free 6-Steps Guide.

🧩 Where the Communication Gap Shows Up

You might be experiencing the gap if…

  • You feel like people “don’t get” what you’re trying to say.

  • Conversations go in circles with no resolution.

  • You often feel misunderstood or judged.

  • Your team avoids hard conversations.

  • You repeat yourself (…and repeat yourself again).

Sound familiar? You're definitely not alone.

👥 How Each DISC Style Contributes to the Gap

Understanding behaviour styles is one of the fastest ways to close communication gaps. personally and professionally.

Here’s where each style can get tripped up:

  • Dominant (D):

They move fast and speak directly… sometimes too directly. Others may feel rushed or dismissed.

  • Influencing (I):

They communicate with enthusiasm, stories, and emotion. but can forget details or follow-through.

  • Steady (S):

They avoid conflict, stay quiet, and don’t always express what they really think or need.

  • Compliant (C):

They focus on facts, accuracy, and logic, which can come across as distant or overly critical.

When we understand these patterns, we stop taking things personally and start communicating with intention.

🔧 How to Bridge the Gap in Your Daily Life

Don’t let another year slip by like a ghost in the night. 👻

Here are a few small shifts that create big results:

1. Seek to Understand Before Being Understood

Ask questions before making assumptions. Curiosity is a superpower.

2. Adapt Your Communication to the Other Person’s Style

Not everyone meets the world the way you do, and that’s okay.

3. Slow Down to Speed Up

A two-minute clarification now saves a two-hour cleanup later.

4. Say What You Mean (Kindly)

Clarity is kindness. Unclear expectations create unnecessary stress.

5. Check In, Don’t Check Out

A quick, “Does that make sense?” or “How does this land for you?” builds trust faster than anything else.

📝 Reflection Questions

  • Where am I noticing communication gaps in my life or business right now?

  • What part might my own style be playing?

  • What is one action I can take this week to communicate with more clarity and intention?
