✨ Mid-Year Leadership Pulse Check
The perfect time to assess how you're leading yourself and others.
July brings a natural slowdown. People are taking time off, vacations are happening, and the pace of work shifts. For many leaders, it feels like the world is hitting pause.
This is a gift.
While everyone else is slowing down, you have a rare opportunity: to step back and honestly assess how you've been leading yourself and your team in the first half of the year.
Most leaders don't do this. We keep pushing forward, checking items off lists, driving toward quarterly goals. We rarely pause to ask: Am I leading in a way that's sustainable? How am I actually showing up? What's working? What needs to change?
But here's what I've learned after years of coaching leaders: The leaders who take time for mid-year reflection are the ones who finish the year stronger. They adjust course early. They fix problems before they become crises. They invest in relationships before they deteriorate. They recommit to their own growth.
This article is your permission to pause and reflect. And I'm giving you a tool to make that reflection count.🎯✨
🌟 Why Mid-Year Reflection Matters
John C. Maxwell teaches the Law of Process: Leadership is not an event; it's a daily discipline.
But here's what most leaders miss: You can't do daily disciplines effectively without regular reflection. Without checking in on what's working and what isn't. Without assessing whether you're building the leader you want to become.
Mid-year is the perfect checkpoint. You're far enough into the year to have real data and experience. But you still have six months to adjust, improve, and course-correct.
The leaders I work with who do mid-year assessments consistently tell me the same thing: "I can't believe how much I would have missed if I hadn't stopped to reflect."
They realize they've been leading reactively instead of intentionally. They notice patterns in their communication that they hadn't seen. They recognize areas where they've grown and areas where they've stalled. They catch problems early that would have become major issues by December.
That's the power of the pause.
Sometimes, we need to take time to reflect, focus, adjust and set an action plan. If you need some guidance on understanding yourself better, becoming clearer on your goals, your strengths and moving forward with confidence, click on the link below to download my Free 6-Step Guide.

👉 The Four Areas of Your Leadership Pulse Check
Your leadership exists in four key dimensions. Let's assess each one:
1. Self-Leadership & Personal Wellbeing
How are you showing up for yourself? Are you practicing the discipline you expect from your team? Are you taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional health? Are you growing?
Self-leadership isn't selfish. It's the foundation. If you're burned out, overextended, or neglecting your own well-being, everything else suffers. You can't pour from an empty cup.
2. Communication Effectiveness
How are you communicating? Are you being clear? Are you listening? Are people understanding what you're asking? Are you adapting your communication to how different people prefer to receive information?
This is where DISC becomes invaluable. Different people communicate differently. A D-type wants conciseness and results. An I-type wants connection. An S-type needs clarity and stability. A C-type needs data and logic. If you're using the same communication approach with everyone, you're probably landing with some people and missing others entirely.
3. Growth & Learning
Are you growing as a leader? Are you reading, learning, reflecting? Are you stretching yourself? Are you staying curious? Or are you stuck in the same patterns and perspectives you had six months ago?
Leadership growth isn't automatic. It's intentional. And if you're not actively growing, you're actually declining relative to the challenges you'll face during the last half of this year.
4. How You're Showing Up for Your Team
How are your team members experiencing your leadership? Do they feel seen and valued? Do they understand where they stand? Are you investing in their growth? Are you creating psychological safety? Are you celebrating wins and addressing issues?
Your perception of your leadership isn't always accurate. But your team's experience is the truth. This is about honestly assessing whether you're showing up in ways that bring out the best in others.

👉 Your Mid-Year Leadership Pulse Check
Below is a simple mid-year leadership pulse check assessment. For each statement, rate yourself on a scale of 1-5:
1 = Not at all | 2 = Rarely | 3 = Sometimes | 4 = Mostly | 5 = Definitely
Self-Leadership & Personal Wellbeing (Questions 1-5)

____ 3. I'm reading, learning, or investing in my own development
____ 4. I have clarity on my personal leadership goals for the second half of the year
____ 5. I feel energized and engaged most days
Subtotal: _____ / 25
Communication Effectiveness (Questions 6-10)
____ 6. I'm clear and concise when communicating with my team

____ 8. I adapt my communication style to how different people prefer to receive information
____ 9. People understand what I'm asking of them

____ 19. I'm addressing problems and conflicts when they arise (not avoiding)
____ 20. I'm celebrating wins and acknowledging good work
Subtotal: _____ / 25
Interpreting Your Total Score
Add up all four subtotals for your TOTAL SCORE: _____ / 100
90-100: You're firing on all cylinders. You're leading intentionally across all four areas. Keep this up in the second half of this year, and you're modelling what sustainable, effective leadership looks like.
75-89: You're strong, with some areas for development. You're doing well overall, but notice which subtotals are lowest. That's where to focus in the second half of this year. Pick one area and commit to improvement.
60-74: You have solid strengths with definite growth opportunities. You're not in crisis, but you're also not operating at full capacity. This second half of the year is your chance to recommit. Pick your two biggest growth areas and create a plan.
Below 60: This is your wake-up call. Something needs to change, and now is the perfect time to make it happen. You have six months to turn this around. This is where coaching, support systems, or a serious commitment to change becomes essential.
Remember: This isn't about perfection. It's about honest assessment and intentional improvement. The leaders who get the most from this exercise are the ones who see low scores not as failure, but as information about where to focus energy in the second half of this year.

What to Do With Your Results
Step 1: Reflect on Your Scores
Don't just score it and move on. Sit with these questions:
Which areas are you strongest in? What have you done to create that strength?
Which areas need work? Why do you think that is?
What patterns do you notice? (For example, maybe you're great at growing yourself but not showing up well for your team, or vice versa)
Step 2: Identify Your Focus Area for the Second Half of this Year
You don't have to fix everything at once. Pick ONE area, the one that, if improved, would have the biggest positive impact on your leadership and your team.
Step 3: Create a Small Action Plan
How will you improve in that area? What will you do differently? Who can support you? What's your first step?
Step 4: Schedule a Check-In
Mark your calendar for a mid-August or September check-in. Reassess that one area. Are you making progress?
💪 Knowing Yourself Is the First Step
This assessment is about self-awareness. And self-awareness is the foundation of effective leadership.
As Maxwell teaches, before you can lead others effectively, you have to lead yourself effectively. And that starts with knowing where you actually stand, not where you hope to be, but where you actually are.
This is where DISC can deepen your reflection even more. Understanding your natural DISC style helps you see not just what you're doing, but why you're doing it and where your blind spots might be.
A high-D leader might score well on driving results but lower on listening and team connection. A high-I leader might score well on relationships but lower on follow-through and accountability. A high-S leader might score well on supporting the team but lower on advocating for themselves and addressing conflict. A high-C leader might score well on quality and systems but lower on speed and risk-taking.
Knowing your style helps you understand your natural strengths and where you need to develop intentionally.
🎯The Second Half Starts Now
You have six months left in 2026. That's enough time to significantly improve your leadership if you're intentional about it.
This mid-year pause isn't about judgment. It's about awareness. It's about choosing how you want to finish the year. It's about committing to the kind of leader you want to be, for yourself and for your team.
Take the assessment. Be honest with your answers. Reflect on what the scores tell you. Then pick one area and commit to improvement.
That's how you turn a mid-year pause into real leadership progress.
